1610 Fort Fisher Blvd S, Kure Beach NC 28449
Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River, this Confederate fort was built to protect Wilmington. It did so until the final days of the war. An amphibious Union assault Jan. 15, 1865, captured the fort, dooming vital Confederate port. Museum/visitor center orients visitors and is the starting point for self-guided tours of the existing fort features.
