Outnumbered Confederates fighting to preserve this important Neuse River railroad bridge were swept aside Dec 17, 1862, as Gen. John Foster reached one of his objectives in a long winter raid. Some of the battlefield is preserved with an interpreted walking trail. Self-guided walking tours.
